Minor in Physics

Students whose career goals lie in directions other than physics, have nevertheless often expressed considerable interest in physics and a wish for greater exposure than can be provided in the introductory physics courses. The following program provides a minimum of 21 hours of physics courses beyond the 15-hour introductory calculus-based course (Physics 131-2-3), along with the appropriate supporting math courses:

Required introductory courses
Course Name Course Num Hours
Introductory Physics 131-2-3 15
Required Minor program courses
Course Name Course Num Hours
Dynamics of Particles and Waves I 261 4
Introductory Seminar 295 1
Methods of Experimental Physics 416 4
Elective physics(see below)   12
TOTAL HOURS   21

Elective physics. Any three of the following 4-hour courses consistent with prerequisite requirements:

Elective Course Num Prerequisite
Dynamics of Particles and Waves II 262 261,conc.133
Dynamics of Particles and Waves III 263 262
Introductory Electronics for Physicists 517 133
Fields and Waves I 555 133,conc.261
Fields and Waves II 656 555
Fields and Waves III 657 656
Statistical Physics I 621 263
Introduction to Quantum Physics I 631 263
Theoretical Mechanics 664 262
  • The minimum mathematics needed to support this program is the four-quarter sequence Calculus and Analytic Geometry: Math 151, 152, 153, 254. There are several alternative ways of meeting the mathematics requirements.
  • The sophomore physics sequence (261-2-3) includes in the third quarter an introduction to quantum physics. The sophomore-level laboratory course 416 will provide a strong laboratory experience beyond the introductory level as well as a serious introduction to statistical analysis of data.
  • The final elective course may require some additional mathematics, depending on the course selected.
  • To obtain more info about the minor program, please contact either the Vice Chair for Undergraduate Studies or the Director of Student Services.
  • To enroll in the minor program, please pick up a Minor Program Form from the College of Arts and Sciences Offices in Denney Hall. Bring your completed form to the Undergraduate Studies Office, 1040 K Physics Research Building for signature.
