Announcements/changes:

  • (30 Mar) This week we embark on four weeks all about oscillation. Please start reading Chapter 4 and have a look at the videos below about complex numbers.
  • (27 Mar) Tomorrow (Saturday) a link will appear in Carmen, assigning you a quiz. You can start the quiz any time you like on Saturday, and will have a 5 hour window to download the midterm and then respond with a PDF upload as you have been doing for homework.
  • (26 Mar) For those unable to be at the class time meetings, links to Zoom recordings of the 11.30am class are available on the Carmen calendar. And over in TopHat you can review the recent questions the Review2 folder.
  • (25 Mar) As you do homework, remember to go over to Essential Skills; the most recent one has been held open to Sunday.
  • (24 Mar) See you at 9.10am and/or 11.30am
  • (23 Mar) Welcome "back". I'll be in the Homework Lounge from 10.30 to noon today; please drop by if only to practice Zooming.

Basic Training in Mathematics by Shankar (first few chapters available as Google preview)

  • Vector Angular Momentum
  • Rigid Body motion
  • Accelerated Frames
  • Relativity
  • Oscillations, including damping, driving and coupling
  • More math methods (linear algebra, complex numbers, Fourier series)

    Assigned problems [30%]
    Midterm #1 [20%]: Thursday Feb 13 7-9pm in SM1153
    Midterm #2 [20%]: Saturday Mar 28, takehome on Carmen-- think of it as a 2hr exam, but you can take 5 hours if you want. Your choice of time.
    Final [30%]: officially Wednesday Apr 29 At your choice of 10am-noon or noon-2pm; likely a takehome too.

    Just as for last term, homework will be due by upload of a PDF file to Carmen. Late homework will be accepted for one week after the due date. Everyone gets two unexcused lates, and one free pass.
