The BaBar LST detector will consist of more than 4000 streamer tubes. We require a separate high voltage channel with individual current measurement and protection against continuous discharge for each tube.

Suitable commercial solutions are available from several manufacturers. CAEN's SY 1527 system, for example, offers a modular design and high channel count. Unfortunately, the price for such a system is not compatible with the budget for the LST detector. An attractive solution is offered by an older CAEN system (SY 546) that provides current measurements for each channel but high voltage setting is shared by 12 channels. This would be sufficient for our application. The SY-546 system is no longer in the CAEN catalogue but our colleagues at Padova have confirmed that it is still available as special order.
Even with the CAEN SY-546 system the high voltage system for the LST detector would cost over half a million dollars. This triggered us to evaluate custom solutions. We came up with a design that is quite similar to the SY-546 system with a number of output channels sharing a common high voltage setting. Here are a few of the relevant features
- Self-contained unit with 320 outputs (1-4 fan out, 80 current monitor channels)
- Outputs are protected against discharge ( ZEUS Diode Protection Circuit)
- Integrated controller for ramping, current monitor, HV setting etc.
- Canbus and Fast Ethernet Interface to control system
