2. COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT-LEVEL BENCHMARKING Summary of Findings
1. There is lots of data available for comparing and contrasting OSU
college/departmental performance with similar units at other institutions
2. This data is not widely used at OSU today, though a few have
leveraged it very effectively (see college/departmental best practices)
3. Department performance in most areas appears to be driven by a set of
variables which are manageable
4. Which specific variables are important varies by college and
department
5. Performance benchmarking can be a valuable input to thoughtful
strategic planning, used appropriately and with care
6. Benchmarking alone is not satisfactory for planning at the
departmental level - much additional context and information is required. Our
findings at this level are therefore only suggestions for further analysis,
rather than conclusive
