HOW NRC ANALYSIS MIGHT BE APPLIED TO SETTING STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
Chemistry
Based on the NRC data, a key issue for OSU appears to be method of
graduate student support - link to research is central
- To jump to the next level, more grad students need to be supported on
RAs
- Adding TAs appears to be counterproductive
For OSU, program size did not appear to represent a gap in 1992
- OSU was ranked in the top quartile, and had the program size to be
competitive, according to this data
- Note: faculty shrunk considerably since 1992, and needs to be rebuilt to
the earlier level at least
- Note: all faculty size data is unadjusted for relative teaching and
student commitments; this is may change this conclusion considerably
-
Publication statistics, a key driver of performance in Chemistry, are
quite strong at OSU; the department needs to focus on sustaining its success in
publications and citations
